Everybody loves a good reboot, but there’s one HSM star who wants the franchise to be the start of something new. On Sunday, High School Musical star Lucas Grabeel said he wouldn’t play Ryan Evans if the film were made today, noting that it would be taking an opportunity away from gay actors. From Cosmopolitan. High School Musical was a defining part of most of our childhoods but, like a lot of films and TV shows, when you re-watch them as an adult you realise you actually missed SO much. And HSM is definitely no exception. Fans of the Disney franchise have taken to Twitter with a new theory on the film, and it’s that the characters Chad Danforth and Ryan Evans were actually gay and in a relationship together.
Just to give you a quick recap we know it’s been a while : Chad was Troy’s basketball best friend and was supposed to be dating Taylor McKessie, while Ryan was Sharpay’s brother and took Kelsi to the prom. But Taylor and Kelsi aside, fans think they’ve figured out that Chad and Ryan were interested in each other the whole time. There is undoubtedly a lot of tension in the scene, which on the surface seems like good old baseball rivalry, but fans think it’s actually a big dose of sexual tension between the pair.
Plus, they reckon that baseball is one huge homoerotic metaphor. The crowd boos. I begin to walk off in shame, when a voice speaks and commands silence from the room.

Over ten years ago, High School Musical was released, and became arguably the most enjoyed and most successful Disney Channel Original Movie to date.
Personally, I loved High School Musical because, like many kids, I fantasized about going to high school, and because it was the first Disney Channel Original Movie musical, and a well done musical at that. They are two theater kids who are extremely intent on playing Minnie and Arnold, the lead roles of the musical. Minnie and Arnold are two young people who have always been friends, but are now embarking on a romantic relationship.
And still, Sharpay and Ryan are so persistent on playing these lovers that they attempt to sabotage Troy and Gabriella, who are also auditioning for these roles. It is even more disturbing to me that no one else in the film seems to find anything bizarre in this desire.

Rodriguez is the first openly gay actor in “High School Musical,” and Carlos In the three movies (, , ), Ryan’s (Lucas Grabeel) sexuality when he asks Seb (Joe Serafini) to be his date at the school dance.
Nearly 15 years after High School Musical first debuted on Disney Channel, its director is now revealing some major new information about one of the main characters. Kenny Ortega confirmed the character of Ryan Evans was written to be queer in a new interview with Variety. Since Ryan’s sexuality was never brought up in any of the three movies, Ortega opened up about why Ryan wasn’t openly gay in High School Musical and what he envisioned for the character’s future. Throughout the three High School Musical movies, Ryan Lucas Grabeel mostly served as a supportive sidekick for his twin sister Sharpay Ashley Tisdale as the duo set their sights on becoming big names as actors, singers, and dancers.
In the end, Ryan was able to break away from his sister’s control and won a scholarship to Juilliard thanks to his talents. Ortega revealed he and the writers imagined that is where Ryan would get to openly live as his authentic self. When asked if he had considered making Ryan openly gay in the movies, Ortega admitted he opted against it out of concern that Disney would not be receptive to the character choice. But Ortega still wanted Ryan to resonate with queer fans of the movies.
And that is what happened. So, although Ryan was never openly gay in the movies, his representation still mattered a great deal to tons of viewers.
